Physical Therapy in Portland

Pain is your body’s way of sending a message. At Move Better, physical therapy helps you understand that message and take action on it. If something hurts, feels tight, or keeps coming back, there is usually a reason. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, our approach examines the movement patterns that may be contributing to the problem. When those patterns improve, many people begin to notice meaningful changes in how their bodies feel and function.

Our goal is simple. We want to help you move with less discomfort, greater confidence, and more control in your daily life.

NEW PATIENTS

Movement Is the Medicine

Every patient begins with our Movement Paradigm Scoring evaluation. This assessment looks at how your entire body works together, rather than focusing only on the area that hurts.

Many aches and injuries develop when the body begins to compensate for weaknesses or limitations elsewhere. Our evaluation helps us identify those patterns so we can better understand what is driving the issue.

From there, we build a care plan centered around corrective exercise. These movements help your body learn more efficient ways to stabilize, move, and handle everyday physical demands. As your movement patterns improve, your body often becomes more resilient and comfortable during daily activities.

What to Expect During Treatment

Most sessions include about 30 to 45 minutes of guided movement. We begin with foundational movement patterns such as breathing, bracing, and hip hinging. These aren’t just warm-up drills. For many people, learning these basic patterns can quickly improve how their bodies feel and move. As care progresses, we gradually build strength and control through movements that properly load the hips and shoulders, improve balance, and develop strength across different planes of motion.

Manual therapy and shockwave therapy may also be used when appropriate to support soft tissue health and help your body recover more efficiently.
Throughout each visit, we take time to explain what we are doing and why. The goal is to help you better understand your body so the improvements continue beyond your appointments.

Real Results, Not Just Short-Term Relief

Many patients notice changes in pain or mobility during their first visit. The most meaningful progress usually happens with consistency. Over six to eight weeks of regular sessions, many people begin to move more comfortably, feel stronger, and return to activities that once felt difficult. We often hear patients say they wish they had learned these movement strategies sooner. When the body moves more efficiently, everyday activities often feel easier and more natural again.

Support Between Visits

Progress doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. We use PhysiApp to provide every patient with a personalized home exercise program that includes clear instructions and short video demonstrations. Each plan outlines the appropriate sets, repetitions, and guidance specific to your care.

Your program is updated as you progress, so it always reflects your current stage of recovery. At follow-up visits, we review your exercises together to ensure they feel comfortable and effective. This ongoing support helps reinforce the changes your body is learning during therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be sore after my appointments?

Some mild soreness within the first 24 to 48 hours is common and often feels similar to post-exercise fatigue. As your body learns new movement patterns, muscles that have not been used as much may feel temporarily tired. The discomfort should remain manageable and short-lived.

How often will I need to come in?

For the first six to eight visits, we typically recommend weekly appointments so the new movement patterns can become more natural and consistent. As progress continues, visits often move to every other week while you continue strengthening and practicing your exercises.

Can physical therapy help chronic pain?

Yes. Chronic pain does not always mean permanent pain. Even when symptoms have been present for months or years, there is often a movement-related factor involved. By improving stability, strength, and movement quality, many people begin to experience meaningful improvements over time.
